Enabling Space Biology experiments through on ground simulations
Welcome to Bio-Orbit
Bio-Orbit is the reference facility for advancing 3D cell culture experiments in space. In collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), we provide state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to ground testing of cutting-edge biological research involving 3D cell culture systems.
Our mission
Our mission is to facilitate groundbreaking experiments in space biology, allowing you to test your ideas for in orbit 3D cell culture experiments, exploiting state-of-the-art facilities for biofabrication, microfluidics and 3D cell culture.
Bio-Orbit helps you to ensure the success of your space biology experiments on 3D cell culture, providing experienced support on all the experimental steps from the design to the analysis of the results, avoiding potential pitfalls of your future space experimental campaign.
Why Choose Bio-Orbit for Your Research?
The European Space Agency (ESA) provides a unique opportunity for scientists to advance our understanding of the impact of space on humans, biological life, and material science. ESA’s ground-based facilities programme is a highly valuable low-cost tool allowing scientists to push forward their understanding of basic science aspects, preparing for more complex spaceflight experiments and advancing human and biological aspects for exploration.
By leveraging our long-standing expertise, we aim to improve the success of your future flight experimental campaign, by supporting you in optimizing and streamlining your workflow.
Our Expertise
Our team of experienced scientists and technicians is dedicated to supporting and guiding researchers throughout their experiments.
Experimental campaign programming
Our expert team can assist you in choosing the more relevant 3D assay to test your biological hypothesis, ranging from simpler systems such as spheroids and organoids to advanced devices including organs on a chip.
Culture of 3D samples in microgravity conditions
If you want to preliminary test potential effects of microgravity on your microphysiological system, we can assist you with already available devices (e.g. Random Positioning Machine) or customizing them to your specific needs (e.g. designing adaptors for flow perfusion during rotation).
Biofabrication of 3D tissues
Thanks to the different technologies available in the facility for construct biofabrication, interested researchers can test the feasibility of 3D construct production for their experiments.
Bio-Orbit Expert Team
At Bio-Orbit, we take pride in our dedicated team of experts, who play a crucial role in shaping the future of space biology. Our team brings together a diverse range of skills and experiences, united by a passion for pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration.
